A minimum of 11 of the weather balloons, containing thousands of packs of contraband cigarettes, have now been retrieved

Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.

Aviation Problems

The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.

Border Security Response

Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.

As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.

Illegal Goods Seizure

At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.

Cross-Border Contraband Trend

Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."

Since January, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.

Cross-Border Effects

At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.

Criminal Methodology

When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."

Law Enforcement Objectives

Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."

European Tensions

The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.

Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
